The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal began with humble beginnings back
on May 10, 1980. With Gary Burton, Ray Charles, Chick Corea, and Vic Vogel on the bill,
and an attendance of 12,000, the event was deemed a success. Today, it is recognized as
one of the world's largest - in fact, in 2004, the festival held the Guiness World
Record as the largest jazz festival in the world.
Cirque du Soleil, whose headquarters reside in Montreal, are no strangers to the
Festival. In fact, the company famously staged its "Midnight Sun" performance at the
2004 edition to world acclaim. But would it surprise you to know that this apperance
in 2004 was not the company's first at the festival?
That's right! On July 5, 1995, Cirque du Soleil would help the festival celebrate
it's 15th anniversary by staging a unique musical performance. Devised by the renowned
duo of multimedia - creators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon - this tribute to the music
of Cirque du Soleil invited the audience on a journey by bringing René Dupéré’s music
into a new environment: to that of a music festival!
