Disney Pin Trading

Introduced in 1999 as part a resort-wide promotion to herald the turn of the century (and millennium) - Disney's Millennium Celebration - Disney Pin Trading has taken on a life of its own since. EPCOT became ground zero for the phenomenon at Disney World and as a multi-visit park-goer, I became a huge fan of the Millennium Celebration and got caught up in the pin craze from the very beginning.

Although I've had a love-hate relationship with the pins (and their cost) over the past 10+ years - buying them up, dropping out of the scene, then getting back into collecting them on more than one occasion - I've enjoyed the ride. Which is why they are an integral part of my personal profile to this day.

Like many other Disney Pin Traders, I've amassed quite a number of them and having done so asked myself exactly what was I going to do with them all? At times I've found a number of creative ways to put them on display and over the years I've created a handfull of Disney Pin related elements - mostly as frames - with potentially more coming in the future!

So, here are my frames!

ORIGINAL FRAMES

The following frames were constructed between 2006-2007 and are now defunct (meaning they no longer exist in these forms). When created, I had been out of the Disney Pin Trading scene for a while; these were my first attempts at finding useful purposes for them - as decoration:

PIN MICKEY STATUE

During the initial creation of Pin Frames, I also stumbled upon this Mickey figure, which can display pins by pushing them into the 4x6 corkboard piece he's holding. Since it was Mickey after-all, I pushed only Mickey pins into it and put it on display!

DISNEY COLLAGE FRAMES

In addition to the five pin frames above I also created two "collage" frames out of various Disney Park materials - buttons, coasters, menu's, brochures, stickers, stationary, etc. - and put them on display. Originally a series of four frames (one for each park, generally speaking) only two were ever completed. They remain in the same form today, and are currently displayed.

The other two, consequently, were going to be centered around 1) a 1971 Magic Kingdom license plate and 2) an Animal Kingdom Lodge license plate.

MORE & CURRENT FRAMES

I stopped making pin frames after completing the first five - I ran out of interesting pins! In addition to running out of interesting pins with which to frame, I also had no place to hang them once I'd moved in 2008; therefore, no new frames (or changes to existing ones) took place between 2007 and 2009, when I moved again. With that place now available to make and hang new frames (not to mention having new pins to display... I got back into pin collecting for a while), I set out to create new frames! The interesting thing about creating is that sometimes the creator's work is never done. One idea begats another, which begats another; sometimes that means re-using materials you've already committed to another project! And I've pilfered a number of pins from my existing frames to make new ones - hopefully better ones! Those marked "defunct" are no longer in those forms.
