- Multi-Angle Performances — There are four "multi-angle" selections,
where you can look at the standard shot, a close-up, a medium shot, or a full-stage
view, all in sync with the rest of the program. The skipping rope (2:22), dralions (4:53), teeterboard (4:57),
and single hand-balancing (5:00) acts can be viewed with this feature (of interest is a bit of
behind-the-scenes trivia: during the hand-balancing act, the first transfer from one
hand to the other is successful in the finished version, while the alternate angles
reveal that the shot is a re-shoot; the performer almost missed it originally.)
- "In The Heart of Dralion" (22:50) — A short 23-minute retrospective on the
creation of Dralion, touching on the troubles the creative team endured to bring
Dralion to audiences.
- Behind the Scenes — Created to complement the live show
experience, Cirque du Soleil Presents Dralion was designed specifically for
television and shot during four sold-out performances in San Francisco. David
Mallet, the award-winning director, employed 14 cameras and special lighting
to capture the essence of the performances. For 12 days, more than 50
specialists worked in close collaboration with the North American Tour
staff to organize the site and to make sure that the Big Top and set were re-lit
and ready for the cameras. { Read More }
Outside the Big Top, we had to rearrange the space to allow a 45-foot video
mobile, a 45-foot generator, an audio truck, and all the support vehicles to
be located as close as possible to the stage.
Inside the tent, seating adjustments were necessary in order to allow the
perfect positions and the best angles for the cameras. Special structures were
also built to rig remote-controlled cameras. As for lighting, more than 100
vari-lite instruments were added to the existing equipment. During the multi-
camera shoot there were 14 cameras, so between 150 and 200 spectators had to
be relocated; but this was superbly handled by the ushers and box office
management.
"We took great care to capture the exhilarating feeling of a live show,
while offering a close-up point of view that takes the audience to the heart
of the performance," said Peter Wagg, Executive Producer. "In other words,
you get the best of both worlds!"
Cirque du Soleil Presents Dralion has won 2 Emmy Awards (Primetime) for:
"Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special" (David Mallet) and
"Outstanding Directing for a Variety or Music Program" (David Mallet).
The TV Special has also won an Emmy, during the Creative Arts Awards for:
"Oustanding Costumes for a Variety or Music Program" (François Barbeau).
