The underworld groans and shakes. Gasses hiss from cracks in the earth.
Winds whip frantically, lashing at the trees. There’s something in the air.
Something must be done. The Guide – a mystical emcee – takes his place and
presides over a ritual incantation, a chaotic choreography of dancers, acrobats,
and animals calling out to the heavens. All eyes are skyward. All souls are
ready. The message is clear: send us your chosen one.
From the moment you walk into the blue-and-yellow-swirled big top
that Varekai performs under you are immediately surrounded by its theme.
All visual points are dominated by the bizarre stage and set.
In the background, 20-foot poles jet into the sky, simulating
a forest. The poles themselves appear bamboo-
like but are metallic in nature, and can sway to the winds of
change or of the weight of the occasional forest creature who climbs
them. The poles are but one part of the a structure that will instantly
capture your attention upon entering the big top, no matter which
door you come through. The stage is cross-sectioned with a catwalk
hanging high above the forest floor, accessible only by a single
staircase, winding around the forest trees.
The forest magically comes alive as creatures of all walks of life
begin to fill the space. First, it's a menacing looking green lizard.
Then another just as colorful makes its appearance. Creatures in reds,
blues, greens, yellows and whites make their presence known one by one.
There's one in particular that makes its presence known and he's our
guide through this amazing scene - the Skywatcher. This wacky character has
wheeled out a device on stage that will remove any un-natural object
and turn it into something wonderful, peaceful. But the Skywatcher has a
time of it when airplanes and other such disturbances get in the
way of his peaceful flight.
Before you know it though the entire forest floor comes alive with
wild dancing and music. Everyone has come out to celebrate... but
their celebration is about to be trodden on by a man - Icarus -
who falls from the skies above.
